Introduction

This research guide contains a selected list of resources for Team Assessment 2 (Products Liability).

Finding secondary sources (by topic and state), jury instructions

General texts and treatises

By state

Jury instructions

At this point, we have a limited number of jury instructions in print in the library, so Lexis, Westlaw and Bloomberg would be the best place to start.  You can sometimes pull them up by title or look for them under secondary sources or by state.  Note: Some jurisdictions might have jury instructions available on the web.

Company research

Basic company information

The company's own website is often a good place to start. If you have trouble finding the company's website, there are also commercial sources you could use if you have them available. Sometimes it can be complicated figuring out name, brands, location, relationships, etc. There is generally more information available about public companies than private ones.  You might also look at news and docket sources.

Recalls

To what agency/groups are complaints/defects reported?

Product Manuals

Manuals are sometimes posted on the company website.  In larger collections, note scope of products.  Dates?

Researching old web pages (more difficult with company sites)

Some search engines keep caches, but retrospectivity sometimes limited.
