Form/Genre Terms

Form/Genre terms

Form/Genre terms are, like Subject terms, attached to HOLLIS records.  They indicate the kind of, rather than the subject of, material in HOLLIS.  Thus a record bearing the Subject term Horror films indicates a work about horror films, while the Form/Genre term Horror films indicates a Horror film itself.  Thus:

Nosferatu / directed by F.W. Murnau ; screenplay by Henrik Galeen.
New York, NY : Kino Classics, [2013] 2 videodiscs (84 min.) : sound, black and white
Widener  |  Harvard Depository
Subject
Dracula, Count (Fictitious character) -- Drama.
Vampires -- Drama.
Form/Genre
DVD-Video discs.
Feature films.
Vampire films.
Horror films.
Silent films.
(This is a shortened HOLLIS Classic record)

Form/Genre terms can be searched in HOLLIS Advanced search, HOLLIS Classic Expanded search and WorldCat Advanced search.

Many HOLLIS records have no Form/Genre (or even Subject) terms, so they cannot yield exhaustive results.  They are very useful in narrowing a large keyword results set and for finding appropriate keywords.

Find Form/Genre terms by doing keyword searches and noticing the Form/Genre field in pertinent records.

Lists of Form/Genre and Subject terms are available at Library of Congress Subject Headings PDF Files

Examples:
Form/Genre : Commemoratives.
Medals.
Cultural artifacts.
Hats.
Harvard objects.
Realia.
T-shirts.
Tote bags.

The Houghton Library here at Harvard holds the archives of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. An online guide for the paper records in Houghton is available, but researchers are asked to use the microfilm which contains over half of the records (in Government Documents/Microtext, Level B, Lamont Library) where possible. An online guide to the microfilm is available together with an index of missionaries, and collection information (in Collection List under Papers of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. There is a book in the Houghton Library Reading Room which lists the original paper records and is annotated to indicate which of these are available on the microfilm. The main collection of ABCFM papers consists of documents, minutes and letters sent by the missionaries to the Board, arranged geographically by location of mission, then chronologically, then alphabetically by name of the missionary.

There are substantial archival and pamphlet collections relating to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions at the Congregational Library in Boston

Center for Research Libraries, Chicago holds the following collections which can be obtained via Interlibrary Loan:
--The Archives of the Council for World Missions, 1775–1940
