Using EndNote Online Through Harvard

EndNote Online lets you manage references in an online library and to create bibiliographies in Word documents just as the desktop version of EndNote does. EndNote Web interacts smoothly with the desktop version and synchronizes your library with your devices, including your iPad using the EndNote app. EndNote Online is recommended for EndNote users who want the advantages of a Web-based library, and possible for those involved in collaborative projects.

Harvard users have access to EndNote Online through our license to the Web of Science and need not purchase EndNote to use it (EndNote Online does not include the desktop version). This version of EndNote Online does not let you transfer attached PDF files. Sharing files requires a personal purchased copy of EndNote. If you own a desktop copy of EndNote, see the "EndNote Online for EndNote Owners" section below.

To begin using EndNote Web:

  1. Go to the EndNote Online site through the Harvard proxy server.
  2. Sign up for an account by following the "Sign Up" link.
  3. In EndNote Online, download the Cite While You Write plug in from the "Format" tab from the main library view. This is only needed if you do not have EndNote.
  4. Instructions for using EndNote Online are available on an extensive Help page which is available from a link in the upper right hand corner of the EndNote Online page.

Using EndNote Online as an EndNote Owner

Individual licenses to EndNote include a personal 2-year license to an EndNote Web account that allows the syncing of documents. Although only one library can be synchronized with a single EndNote Online account, there is no limit to the number of machines that may have synchronized copies of that library.

  • Begin using EndNote Online by registering through the "Sync" (1) section of the the EndNote Preferences (under the Edit menu in Windows, or under the EndNote menu in the Mac OS). On pre-X6 versions, this is called EndNote Online. Clicking on the Sync tool in the EndNote tool bar will initiate registration, too.
  • Once your account is established, set up EndNote Online in the EndNote Preferences tool (as in the image below). Use the email address and password that you established in setting up your EndNote Online account (2).
  • In the Sync Library box (3) choose the library you would like to synchronize with the EndNote Online account.
  • To start writing with EndNote Online, you must tell Cite While You Write in Word about your EndNote Onlineaccount.
    - In Word for Windows click on the Preferences tool on the right of the EndNote tool pane.
    - In Word for the Mac choose the Cite While You Write Preferences from the EndNote Tool menu.
Set the Application pull down to EndNote Online (1) and enter your account information (2). If you want to see Find It @ Harvard links when you connect to EndNote Online, replace the URL with one that routes through the Harvard proxy server (3):
