Why are there Two Hollis Catalogs?

What's the Big Deal About Subject Words?

Subject words can help narrow down a search if a keyword yields too many results. In HOLLIS Classic, scroll to "Subject beginning with..." or go to Expanded Search and choose "Subject Words." You can also start with keyword searching and click on hyperlinked subject terms in the HOLLIS records. In HOLLIS, use the Subject facet to narrow your search, or choose Advanced Search and enter terms in the Subject box.

Subjects can help you explore the catalogs: if you've found one very useful book, click the subject headings links to find more books like it.  You can search for sound recordings using terms, titles, and names.

These examples are intended to show how subject words can be combined for more specific searches; there are many other relevant subject headings (in Expanded Search, you can use subject keywords in any order, rather than typing the entire subject heading):

Ethnomusicology
Ethnomusicology -- Cross-cultural studies
Ethnomusicologists -- Biography
Musicians -- Afghanistan -- Social life and customs
World music -- Analysis, appreciation

Field recordings -- Catalogs (or insert country name)
Sound recordings in ethnomusicology -- Catalogs
Music -- Iran
Music -- Religious aspects -- Islam

Keywords (subject words in HOLLIS facets)
