Distributed or Published Use Reproduction Form

Permission to Publish: To request permission to publish images from the Schlesinger Library please complete the Distributed or Published Use Request Form below. The form gives the Schlesinger's terms of use and credit line. The library charges a fee for use of images.

Copyright: The publishing party assumes all responsibility for clearing reproduction rights and for any infringement of the U.S. Copyright Code. In most cases, the Schlesinger Library grants permission as the repository holding the visual material and does not control the rights of reproduction. For more information see please see the Harvard Guide to Copyright and Fair Use.

High-resolution scans (300 ppi Tiff files) may be ordered for publication or exhibit use. If you want to order low-resolution scans for research purposes please use the Personal or Scholarly Use Order Form 

  • Existing Digital Images in VIA or HOLLISPlease first complete the request form below. Publication-quality digital copies of existing digital images in the online catalog can be ordered using Harvard's Imaging Services online request form. Request "existing digital images" on the Imaging Services form and please supply the image number and title or caption for each image so that they can identify the images that you want. The cost is $20 per 1-10 image files, plus a $10 fee per 15 files for electronic delivery. Standard turn-around time is 15 business days from receipt of payment. Rush orders may be available for an additional fee depending on availability.

  • New Digitization: To request reproductions of material not yet digitized, please complete the request form below and include a description and the location of the item that you would like digitized.  Generally, digitization is $20 per image, with additional fees for fragile, oversized, or bound material. There is a $25 delivery and handling fee per order and turn-around time is 4-5 weeks from receipt of payment. Rush orders may be available for an additional fee depending on availability.

Permission to Publish Images Agreement:

Please read and click on "I/we agree" in the box below.

1. Credit line: The Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University. This credit line must be included for each photograph reproduced. In the case of images published on the internet, the publishing party will create a link to the Schlesinger Library’s home page (http://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/schlesinger-library) from the image or credit.


2. Permission is granted for one-time use only. Photographs may not be reused without the written permission of the Schlesinger Library.


3. Images published on the internet will have a resolution of 72 dpi and will not be larger than 600 x 800 pixels.


4. Images will not be manipulated and each will be used in its entirety.


5. Permission to publish fee: When a decision is made to use a given photograph for publication, please notify the library and pay the appropriate fee. Permission to publish is contingent on the receipt of this form and the fee.


6. The publisher undertakes to send the Schlesinger Library a copy of the publication containing the photographs.


7. The permission of the Schlesinger Library as the repository holding the photographs is required for publication. In most cases, however, the library does not control the rights of reproduction, which may have been retained by the photographer or some other party.


The publishing party assumes all responsibility for clearing reproduction rights and for any infringement of the U.S. Copyright Code. The publishing party also agrees that in all instances, it will hold the Schlesinger Library and its agents harmless against any and all claims arising or resulting from the use of this image and shall indemnify the Schlesinger Library and its agents for any and all costs and damages arising or resulting from any such unauthorized use.
