Using the Moody System at Harvard Law Library for Foreign Legal Research

Introduction

What is the Moody Classification System?

Before it adopted the Library of Congress Classification system, Harvard Law School used an in-house call number system known as the Moody system

The Moody system arranges materials first by 1) jurisdiction;  2) form and subject; and 3) author. In some instances it will also include a date.

Interpreting a Moody Call Number

The Moody call number for the book Droit Constitutionnel et Institutions Politiques by Raymond Barraine is FRA 962 BAR

FRA 962 BAR indicates

1. Jurisdiction:

  • FRA=France

2. Form & Subject

  • 900=  treatises
  • 62 = constitutional law
  • Note: A decimal extension of the number that makes up the second part is sometimes used to designate a further subdivision of the subject.

3. Author

  • BAR=Barraine, abbreviated

Using Moody Call Numbers in HOLLIS

To use the Moody classification system to browse older materials in HOLLIS.

Using the tables below identify the country, form and subject you are interested in.

Example: To find older treatises on commercial law in the United Arab Emirates, use UAE 929 ( (UAE=United Arab Emirates 900s=treatises 29=commercial law).

In HOLLIS, go to Starts With/Browse in the top menu and select Call Number Other and search your call number.

Jurisdictions: A-G

A Note on Moody Jurisdictional Codes

Some of the symbols used in the Moody system are anachronistic or do not reflect modern sensibilities. The Library does not always have the time nor funding to correct records for such a large collection when political changes take place. Please note that no new materials use these call numbers.
