To make expectations clear, the HLS Library has established a Food & Drinks Policy and Sound Zones for specific activities throughout our space.
Whether you need to snack, hydrate, study quietly, work with a group, or take a phone call or video interview, this guide will help you find out what's okay to do and where.
Effective Fall 2018
Non-alcoholic drinks in covered containers are permitted throughout Library spaces with the exception of:
Snacks are permitted throughout Library spaces with the exception of the following food-free areas:
Meals and messy or smelly foods are NOT permitted.
Please take your meals in Wasserstein or the Hark. Examples include pizza, soup, food items with sauce, onions, garlic or other foods with strong smells.
Waste disposal and cleanup
Please clean up and dispose of all food waste, beverage containers, wrappers, etc. in a designated waste bin when you leave. Spaces should be left clean.
Notify Library staff of any spills.
Providing a clean and pest-free environment is an important part of the Library's preservation program.
Library administration may approve special events during which exemptions to the food and drink policy may be made. Prior approval from Library administration must be sought for any exemptions to the food and drink policy.
Library users who are not complying with the Library's food and drink policy will be notified of the policy and asked to abide by it. Users who fail to abide by the policy will be asked to relocate to an appropriate space or leave the Library.
Areas for quiet reading and study. Please keep noise to a minimum and take conversations to other zones.
Stairwells and other nooks are quiet zones, as sound in them carries to other areas.

The others you talk or work with must be present in the room! Please take calls to phone zones.
• 2nd floor Microforms Room booths
Phone Zones are the only areas where talking on phones is permitted.
Please keep ringers on silent throughout the Library.
