Context and Background

Oxford Bibliographies Online provides scholarly annotated bibliographies leading you to key sources on topics in the social sciences and humanities.

Annual Reviews offer comprehensive collections of critical reviews by leading scholars.

Research Handbooks and Companions offer introductions to topics and critical surveys of the current state of scholarship on a subject. The articles included review key issues and major debates in a field of study.

Government & Law

  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts is a database covering the journal literature in all areas of political science.
  • HeinOnline is a digital collection of primary and secondary law and government materials. Primary sources include U.S. Congressional publications and U.S. Supreme Court documents. Secondary sources include large collections of law reviews and law journals, U.S. and foreign.
  • CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online is comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, papers from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

  • Bibliography of Asian Studies - resource covering all subjects related to East, Southeast, and South Asia.
  • HAPI: Hispanic American Periodicals Index - a resource for scholarly articles published in Latin America or treating Latin American and U.S. Hispanic topics.
  • Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies is a systematic and non-evaluative index to research, policy, and scholarly discourse on the countries and peoples of the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa.
  • Africa-wide Information: NiPAD - a collection of databases covering all subjects in African studies.
  • ABSEES: American bibliography of Slavic and East-European Studies Online.

Multidisciplinary

  • Web of Science - a database enabling you to search across disciplines in the sciences and social sciences.
    • Once you have done a search, limit to "reviews" to find literature reviews on your topic.
    • Use this resource to find how many times an article has been cited since publication.

Primary Sources

ProQuest Congressional provides users with access to a comprehensive collection of historic and current congressional information. 

Digital National Security Archive has become the world's largest non-governmental library of declassified documents, providing more than 43,000 of the most important declassified documents that led to key policy decisions in the post-World War II era.

U.S. Declassified Documents Online provides immediate access to a broad range of previously classified federal records spanning the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The collection brings together the most sensitive documents from the presidential libraries and many executive agencies.

U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of State Archive Websites

The American Presidency Project at UC Santa Barbara is an archive of over 77,000 documents related to the study of the American Presidency. The resource also includes a video archive of various presidential addresses.

ProQuest Statistical Insight provides access to: statistical information; indexing and full text statistical data from U.S. government publications, state and private sources; and visualization tools.

News Resources

Nexis Uni  is a database containing more than 15,000 news, legal and business sources, including print and online journals, television and radio broadcasts, newswires and blogs; Local, regional, national and international newspapers with deep archives; Extensive legal sources for federal and state cases and statutes, including U.S. Supreme Court decisions since 1790.

Factiva provides worldwide full text coverage of local and regional newspapers, trade publications, business newswires, press release wires, media transcripts, and news photos.
