What to Know

The Archives and Special Collections Reading Room, located in Houghton Library, serves material from the Harvard University Archives, Houghton Library, and paper-based special collections from the Harvard Film Archive and the Loeb Music Library in one convenient location. The reading room is open to any researcher working with these collections, regardless of affiliation.

In order to use the ASC Reading Room you will need to complete some steps in advance.

  1. Making an appointment is necessary to guarantee a seat.
  2. You will also need to place requests at least 3 business days in advance for the material you wish to consult except for:
  • Material your instructor has put on hold for your class
  • Material you have previously requested that is still on hold
  • Reference material shelved in the reading room
