Step 1: Login to ProQuest ETD
Login to the the ProQuest ETD Administrator Site for HGSE and enter your Harvard Key credentials.
Step 2: Review Instructions
ProQuest provides lots of detailed help to guide you through the submission process
- You can save and return to your submission at any time.
- As you complete submission steps, checkmarks will appear so you can easily see where you left off and what steps remain.
- Prepare "items to have on hand" in addition to your Capstone Handbook
- Click on the Subject Category list and review categories -- Please use 'Educational Leadership' as your primary category

Step 3: Decide on ProQuest Publishing Options
- This section of the submission form relates to publishing options for ProQuest platforms.
- Publishing Type
- The Library suggests you select "Traditional." Your Capstone will already be made available open access through upload to Harvard's DASH.
- Choosing the "Open Access" will also make your Capstone available open access in ProQuest databases, but for a fee.
- In either case, you will be asked to review a terms/condition statement and agree to it. Connect with the Library if you have any concerns or questions about the indicated terms.
- Access Options (e.g., Delay or Embargo)
- Most students do not delay release (i.e., embargo) of their Captone and select "Yes" to proceed with publishing.
- Some students may want to request a delay and should select "No" in order to delay publishing. This decision should be made in consultation with committees and the Ed.L.D. program administrators. Detailed guidance about embargos is available in the Capstone Handbook.
- Within the ETD Submission form, you will need to choose the length of the embargo and choose from a pre-set list of reasons for your embargo. There is a required note field as well.
Step 4: Decide on DASH Publishing Options
- This section of the submission form relates to publishing options for the Harvard University Institutional Repository, DASH.
- If you did not request an embargo in the previous step, select "Yes." You will be presented with a longer agreement of terms/conditions you'll need to agree to. Connect with the Library if you have any concerns or questions about the indicated terms.
- If you did request an embargo in the previous step, select "No." You will then be prompted with the same questions about the length and reasoning for your embargo as in the previous step. Please enter the same embargo details for delay in DASH as you did for delay in ProQuest.
Step 5: Add Your Contact Information
- Your name should appear as it does in your Capstone.
- Please be sure to use a permanent email address and contact information for when you transition to an alumni. Alums do not retain their Harvard email addresses.

Step 6: Provide Details about Your Capstone
- Copy and paste directly from your Capstone to provide the Title and Abstract information.
- You have an option of providing a translation of the Title and Abstract in one additional language
- Be sure to choose the appropriate Degree Awarded: Doctor of Education Leadership

- You are welcome to choose Subject Categories as you see fit.
- Subject Categories are controlled language within the ProQuest Dissertation and Theses database that will help make your work discoverable.
- On the first Instructions page, you will find a PDF version of the Subject Categories
- "Educational Leadership" should be used for the primary category.
- Keywords often come from the Abstract, but you are welcome to provide any keywords or phrases you think supplement the Subject Categories list.

Step 7: Upload your PDF Capstone
- Be sure to reference your Capstone Handbook for specific details about formatting and PDF embedding font instructions.
- Embedding fonts are important for readability and accessibility, ensuring anyone reading your Capstone sees it within the same formatting, structure, fonts, images, tables, etc., as you intended. Refer to the "PDF Help" in ProQuest ETD for technical guidance.
- For the majority of students, you will have relied on citation and fair use rather than having pursued formal copyright permissions. If, however, you have included images, videos or other content that you have secured formal licensing or permission to use, please upload the relevant documentation.
- This is the last step required for submitting your Capstone, however there are some optional steps you might like to take. Please visit the 'Optional Steps' section on the left menu for more information. If you do not wish to proceed to optional steps, please be sure to visit the 'Final Steps' section on the left menu for more information.
