About the Guide

For the purpose of creating a resource around inclusive reference, the Reference Services Team (RST) at Gutman Library embarked on a process of guided learning centered on such concepts as inclusive pedagogy, Black feminist thought, cultural humility, trauma-informed pedagogy, culturally-sustaining pedagogy, and universal design for learning. A curated list of readings was selected by the project lead who also led discussions and prompted dialogue around each concept in an effort to build a consensus towards a shared understanding of what inclusive reference is and should look like. The culminating result of this concentrated study has been the development of guiding principles and best practices that will enable us and other information workers to be more mindful in our interactions with all those who seek research assistance within our libraries and information spaces. Inquiries about inclusive reference or our process can be directed to jamillah_gabriel@gse.harvard.edu or any Gutman RST librarian.
