Manuals and guides
Scholars conducting the Harvard Project on the Soviet Social System categorized the raw data (transcripts of interviews) by developing a number code which identifies different topics. Indices were created for these coded categories to reference where these specific topics are discussed in a given interview.
The following manuals and indexes have been included in the digitization project:
- Manual for Use with A-Schedule Materials provides category definitions, with their corresponding code numbers. Appendix C of the Manual is a compilation of the questionnaires used to conduct the interviews of the A-Schedule
- Manual for Use with B-Schedule and Friedrich/Fainsod Materials gives a list of the topics of the interviews, as well as category definitions and code numbers for the B-Schedule
- Qualitative File: A-Schedule category listing lists categories (by code number) within interviews (in case number order)
- Qualitative File: Index of Special Non-File Categories lists special categories (code numbers 37 through 46) within interviews (in case number order)
- A-Schedule Face Sheet Data Book gives detailed data about respondents
- Glossary of Selected Transliterated Russian Terms
- Guide for Interviewing Soviet Escapees analyzes the methods used for interviewing former Soviet citizens, and problems encountered by the interviewers
