Basic Searching in Citation Index Databases
The Cited References search tab allows for searches for author, title, work (including journal, conference, and series titles), digital object identifier (DOI), publication year, and volume, issue, or page numbers. This search is used to find the articles that cited a work since its publication.
When searching for an author, enter last name and first/middle initials only, e.g., Gaudet R.
If you are uncertain of the middle initial, you can use an asterisk to search the for any, or no, middle initial, which is called a wildcard or truncation search: Gaudet R*.
Once the search has been entered, a table with a list of matching articles is presented.
Sometimes there are multiple authors with similar names or too many results to review, so additional search terms can be added.
In the article results list, the system highlights the search terms in yellow, in this case the author name Gaudet R* and molecular in the title. This table presents 5 cited reference articles, verses the original 315 cited references from the original author search.
From the article results table, the option is available to either choose the hyperlinked number in the last column (Citing Articles) OR tick on one or more of the article boxes and click on the See Results button.
The results will present the works that have cited the article you searched. To find the full text of any of these articles, look for the blue Try Harvard Library highlighted in yellow below.
