Introduction to Citation Index Databases

Introduction

Using the "Cited Reference" tab in the Web of Science database(s) searches the bibliographies of the records in the database. A list of matching references is then displayed. Selecting one or more of these references provides linkage to the full citation of the citing article. These databases allow you to start with an article or book of interest and find more recent articles or books that have cited it.

Web of Science has ten searchable databases of citations, with different subjects and date ranges. All are accessible via Citation Indexes / Web of Science. You can choose to search all of them, or a subset of them, in the dropdown menu.

Each index database contains many thousands of records of individual journal articles and books (books included for 2005- ). The bibliography and/or footnotes for each article is included and can be searched via a Cited Reference search for a chosen author or work.

The search screen allows searches by author, title, work (including journal, conference, and series titles), unique digital object identifier (DOI), publication year, and volume, issue, and page numbers.
