This guide—intended for faculty members, teachers, administrators, and others who advise and mentor students of science and engineering—attempts to summarize features that are common to successful mentoring relationships. Its goal is to encourage mentoring habits that are in the best interests of both parties to the relationship. While this guide is meant for mentoring students in science and engineering the majority of it is widely applicable to mentoring in any field.

Mentorship platform that provides an interest-driven way for students to find invested mentors for professional or personal guidance. In recognizing that students may only set expectations for their side of the mentoring relationship, our platform allows faculty to communicate more clearly their own level of comfort in engaging in a mentoring relationship. In recognizing that many clinical, academic, and personal demands exist for faculty, we hope to empower faculty to articulate what their desired level of mentorship involvement will be.

Peer mentoring resources for HMS quadrangle junior faculty.

The JCSW: a standing committee of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, established in 1973, representing a constituency of women and men faculty, fellows, residents, post docs, students, and staff of both Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, as well as the faculty of affiliated hospitals and institutions.

The Mission: to facilitate and enhance the contribution of women faculty and staff at HMS and HSDM by expanding and enhancing opportunities for leadership and advancement. This is achieved through identifying and documenting obstacles, then developing educational programs, networking events, and recommendations to the Dean's Office to address areas for improvement.

The mission of the HMS Office for Faculty Affairs is to support the recruitment, retention, academic advancement and career satisfaction of our diverse faculty through education, service, communication, and timely recognition of scholarly achievement.

The Office of Faculty Development at Children’s Hospital announced 2013-2014 Guidelines for Mentors and Junior Faculty, including content on Dr. Joanne Kamens’ Joint Committee on the Status of Women presentation (see Appendix 2 Structured Peer Mentoring) at Harvard Medical School, and checklists for Researchers, Clinicians and Medical Educators.

The annual CHADD Mentoring Course is sponsored by CHADD (the Consortium of Harvard Affiliated Offices for Faculty Development and Diversity) and the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center (Harvard Catalyst). Facilitated by faculty across HMS-affiliated institutions, the Program covers the spectrum of skill sets and resources as well as strategies for specific challenges.

Highlighting the importance of networks, mentors, and communities of support, the event will begin with brief remarks about two remarkable HMS role models and mentors, Elizabeth Hay and Lynne Reid. In addition to Dean Tarbell, Michael Gimbrone, Chairman of the Department of Pathology (BWH), Joan Brugge, Chair of the Department of Cell Biology (HMS), and Rosemary Jones, Associate Professor of Pathology (HMS), will speak briefly to the contributions and personal impact of these HMS women leaders.
