General Research Tips

  • Generate a list of your search terms and any synonyms.
  • Sign in to HOLLIS to get the most complete results and to pin resources and searches.
  • Search for each term in HOLLIS or databases.
  • If searching for a phrase, use quotation marks around the phrase.
  • Use the filters on the right side of HOLLIS to narrow language, date, and resource type.
  • When you find a promising resource, click on the record for it and look at the Subjects that are listed. Those are the terms HOLLIS uses in its catalog.
  • Look at the footnotes and references in scholarly articles - they can lead you to related sources.
  • The first resources you find may not be the best. Keep looking!
