On May 10, 2010, President Barack Obama announced his nomination of Solicitor General and former Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court.

This guide will give a brief overview of Kagan's legal career and publications, as well as selected biographical materials and news coverage of her nomination.

Kagan graduated from Harvard Law School in 1986, was a visiting professor at HLS from 1999-2001, joined the faculty in 2001, was appointed the first Charles Hamilton Houston Professor of Law in 2003, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2003 to 2009, when she was appointed Solicitor General of the United States.
