To find books, periodicals, manuscripts, videos, etc., on a topic in HOLLIS, put in likely keywords and choose Library Catalog. Look at pertinent records and find the terms under Subject.
For example, searching Malaya colonial economic* yields
The political economy of imperial relations : Britain, the sterling area, and Malaya, 1945-1960, by Alex Sutton. Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire : Palgrave Macmillan, 2015, 222 pages
Subjects Sterling area -- History -- 20th century

Imperialism -- Economic aspects -- Great Britain -- History -- 20th century
Economic history -- 1945-1971
Great Britain -- Foreign economic relations -- Malaysia -- Malaya
Malaya -- Foreign economic relations -- Great Britain
Malaya -- Economic conditions -- 20th century

Great Britain -- Economic policy -- 1945-1964
HOLLIS Record
Redo the search using to proper Subject terms together with any useful keywords. Sometimes there are no, or several, subject terms for a topic. Anti-colonialism yields
Under Refine my results: Subject on the right of the results list there are more main terms (Decolonization, Economic policy, Labor policy) to try, but not the terms after the dashes ( -- ) which are called subdivisions. NOTE: If you hit one of the terms in this Subject list, HOLLIS will find records with the term, say Decolonization, only on records in the set originally formed by searching Malaya colonial economic* . Redo your search using any additional pertinent Subject terms. Also, go to Starts with.../Browse (top black band) and put in Malaysia adjusting to Browse by Subject. This is very useful in breaking down a large subject and in giving you more subdivisions, which can be applied to other Subject terms, to search. Thus:
- Imperialism -- Economic aspects
- Nationalism -- Economic aspects
Whenever you have a reference to a useful book, look it up in HOLLIS and see what the Subject terms are.
Any pertinent book published during your era may be a primary source, but certain kinds of primary sources, including originally unpublished sources such as letters and diaries published later, have particular terms attached to their Subject terms in a HOLLIS record. Change Any field to Subject for cleanest results.
- --Archives
- --Correspondence
- --Description and travel
- --Diaries
- --Interviews
- --Manuscripts
- --Oral history
- --Notebooks, sketchbooks, etc.
- --Personal narratives (refers to accounts of wars and diseases only)
- --Sources (usually refers to collections of published primary sources)
When you find a pertinent book, go to Starts With.../Browse and put in the call number, adjusting the menu to Library of Congress (Wid-LC) or Other. This shows you other books on the same subject, even though they may be in storage or checked out.
In HOLLIS Advanced Search do searches of the form:
Subject contains Japan "Economic policy"
AND
Keywords anywhere contains: translat* Japanese
- Limit to English
- Translat* yields both translated and translation
- This search is not exhaustive. Where you have a particular work, do a Title exact phrase search, limiting to English

Searching Early English Books Online (EEBO), Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) and Early American Imprints.
Since spelling in early books is variable and the long s (which looks like an f) is often used, it is important to try variant spellings and the wild card feature. ECCO offers fuzzy searching in Advanced Search
Both Early English Books Online (EEBO) and Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) contain full text of most books published 1475-1800 in Great Britain and North America and books published in English anywhere.
Early English Books Online (EEBO) offers full text for works, including much ephemera and many periodicals, dated 1475-1700. Uses Library of Congress Subject Headings.
EEBO uses page images and OCR text. Although searchable by words and phrases, there are character recognition errors and full Boolean searching is not possible. Early English Books Online Text Creation Partnershiphas input over 25,000 works and offers corrected text and full Boolean and other search capabilities for this subset of EEBO.Periodicals included in EEBO include corantos, newsbooks and periodicals included in the Thomason Tracts. Periodicals Search guide.
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) offers full text for English language works dated 1700-1800. Uses Library of Congress Subject Headings. Searchable by words and phrases based on the OCR text. Many 18th century American imprints are not included in ECCO because they are available in Early American Imprints (EAI) (next).
Both EEBO and ECCO are based on the English Short Title Catalog (ESTC) which has over 470,000 catalog (no full text) entries listing books, periodicals, newspapers and some ephemera printed before 1801. Works published in Britain, Ireland, British colonies, and the US are included, together with items printed elsewhere which contain significant text in English, Welsh, Irish or Gaelic. Books falsely claiming London publication are included. Items omitted from ECCO because they are available in EAI are represented in the ESTC. Reprints (reissues of original works) are not usually included in ECCO; they are fully represented in the ESTC.
Early American Imprints, Series 1 (1639-1800) and Early American Imprints, Series 2 (1801-1819) are based on the microform collection of books, pamphlets and broadsides issued in America recorded in Charles Evans' American Bibliography and Roger P. Bristol's Supplement to Charles Evans' American Bibliography, and in American Bibliography: A Preliminary Checklist for 1801-1819 by Ralph Shaw and Richard Shoemaker.

- Title, searching the contents of a particular work, including periodical titles
- Author, searching the works of a particular author, including names of organizations and government entities.
- Subject, searching the Subject terms (same Subject terms as those used in HOLLIS) for a particular topic
You can then further refine the results using the left-hand Refine Results column by country of publication, language, date, etc.
