Varaztad Hovhannes Kazanjian Papers, 1900-1979Kazanjian (Harvard, D.M.D. 1905 and M.D. 1921) was an internationally known pioneer in plastic surgery, specializing in the treatment of facial deformities. In 1915 he joined the First Harvard Unit as its Chief Dental Officer and served with the British Expeditionary Forces. In 1919 Kazanjian was appointed Professor of Oral Surgery at Harvard Dental School and in 1922 was appointed Professor of Clinical Oral Surgery at Harvard Medical School. In 1941 he became Harvard Medical School's first Professor of Plastic Surgery. Kazanjian served on the staffs of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Massachusetts General Hospital, New England Deaconess Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital and Boston City Hospital.
Correspondence, articles, lectures, drafts, patient records and histories, photographs, models, moulages and instruments relating to Dr. Kazanjian's career as a plastic surgeon, professor, author and his involvement in professional organizations. Patient records form the bulk of the collection. The records from World War I document innovative techniques in maxillofacial reconstructive surgery. Prominent correspondents include John Marquis Converse, Reed O. Dingman, and Robert H. Ivy.
