National History Day 2018-2019: Triumph and Tragedy

LGBTQ Rights

LGBTQ people have endured many personal and public tragedies, from hate crimes and rejection by their families to laws restricting their right to work and marry. However, since the advent of the gay rights movement, often recognized as beginning in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots, the LGBTQ community has seen many triumphs, including a shift in public opinion and increasing legal protection. This page includes collections telling the stories of prominent LGBTQ rights activists as well as lesser-known people. For more collections dealing with LGBTQ rights, see our LGBTQ subject guide.
