Cookbooks and Food Publications

A guide to the Schlesinger Library's cookbooks and other culinary collections

Food and Cooking Zines

Zines are print works that are usually made in small batches, self-published/self-distributed (rather than put out by a traditional commercial publisher), and reproduced using accessible technologies like photocopiers or word processors. They often exemplify a homemade or DIY aesthetic, which allows space for formal and topical innovation. The Schlesinger has a large collection of zines, including many that touch on topics related to food and cooking such as vegetarianism/veganism, gardening/foraging, and intersections of food and identity.

A few examples of food-related zines are listed below. To find more like these, try a HOLLIS search using the keyword "zine" plus a term like "cookingor "food."

For much more in-depth information about the Library's zine collection (including more food and cooking highlights) and detailed information about how to request zines for use in the Reading Room, see our Zines at Schlesinger Library research guide.
