This book is the first of ten numbered volumes of University records from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, known collectively as the College Books.

College Book No. 1, which dates back to 1639, includes a list of graduates from 1642 to 1795; the College laws; library rules and a catalog of books; the text of the Charter of 1650; Board of Overseers and Corporation minutes; accounts of gifts and bequests; and numerous other administrative and financial records.

Recorded in College Book No. 1 are minutes from a Board of Overseers meeting held on December 27, 1643 which state, “It is ordered that there shall be a colledge seale in forme following,” accompanied by a hand-drawn design for the proposed College coat of arms depicting three books bearing the word “VERITAS.”
