Photographer, artist, and feminist activist Mima Cataldo graduated from the University of Michigan (BA 1965), Columbia University (MA 1972), and Syracuse University (PhD 1979 and MLS 1997). Interested in the field of visual sociology, Cataldo took part in the Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace & Justice, a gathering of women near the Seneca (New York) Army Depot protesting the deployment of nuclear weapons in 1983. Her book (written with others), The Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace & Justice: Images and Writings, appeared in 1987.

Dorothea Jacobson-Wenzel is a freelance photographer and longtime member of the National Organization for Women (NOW). Her work largely documents NOW activities in the greater Chicago area. This collection includes photographs of speakers and marchers, most at NOW events (1975-1989), as well as anti-gay and anti-abortion protesters.

A working photojournalist, Bettye Lane recorded women’s efforts, triumphs, and defeats for more than thirty years. Even if she was not assigned to cover an event, she often showed up anyway, camera in hand, and captured everything from caucuses and conferences to marches, sit-ins, picket lines, and demonstrations against homophobia, other kinds of bigotry, and homelessness. Along the way, she recorded not only leaders but also ordinary people forging real social change.

Freda Leinwand was a photographer known for her work documenting the women's movement, women working in non-traditional jobs, and children and adults with disabilities. Leinwand’s career and interest in photography began in the early 1960s during the course of her work as a dialogue and film editor for 20th Century Fox and MGM Telestudios, respectively. She pursued educational opportunities at Columbia University and the New School, studying photography with Ralph Hattersley, Joseph Breitenbac, and Marion Palfi.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed on June 30, 1966, during the Third National Conference of Commissions on the Status of Women in Washington, D.C. NOW was incorporated in 1967, and local chapters were formed; by 1975 there were over 600 chapters. As membership increased, the organization addressed more issues, including a "war on poverty," the Equal Rights Amendment, child care, abortion rights, sexual harassment, women in government, women and religion, and violence against women. 9 to 5: Organization for Women Office Workers was founded in Boston in 1972 by Ellen Cassedy and Karen Nussbaum. In 1977 several affiliated groups, including Boston 9 to 5, sponsored the formation of a national group, Working Women, with headquarters in Cleveland. In 1983 the national organization changed its name to 9 to 5, National Association of Working Women. By means of publicity, conferences, affirmative action campaigns, and job and wage surveys, the organization has worked to improve conditions for women employed by banks, publishing houses, insurance companies, colleges and universities, and other major employers. Besides affirmative action and equal pay, important issues include the status of minority women, age discrimination, health and safety concerns relating to office automation, and "re-entry" for displaced homemakers.

A graduate of Cornell University, Jane R. Plitt was executive director of the National Organization for Women (NOW) from September 1973 until her resignation in August 1975. The photographs in her collection document NOW meetings and staff.

Betsy Warrior was a Boston-area feminist, author, and graphic artist. Photographs in her collection document the march on International Women's Day in 1971 in which women walked from Boston to Cambridge in a demonstration to demand a women's center. Some of the participants seized a Harvard University building in protest, occupying the building for ten days.

Founded in 1979 by Susan Brownmiller and others, Women Against Pornography (WAP) sought to educate men and women about what it saw as the essence of pornography: the degradation, objectification, and brutalization of women. To this end it offered slide shows and lectures, maintained a referral service for victims of sexual exploitation, compiled statistics, organized protests, and sponsored tours of New York City's Times Square area. WAP was disbanded in 1990.

The Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice opened on July 4, 1983, near the Seneca (New York) Army Depot as a place for women to gather to protest the deployment in Europe of nuclear weapons, specifically the Cruise and Pershing II missiles.

The Women's Equity Action League of Massachusetts was convened with chapter status on September 9, 1971, by Vilma Hunt at Pine Manor Junior College.
