Thomas Wentworth Higginson (Dec. 22, 1832-May 9, 1911) graduated from Harvard College in 1841 and from Harvard Divinity School in 1847. He was ordained on Sept. 15, 1847, and served Unitarian churches in Newburyport (1847-50) and Worcester (Free Church, 1852-58), Massachusetts. He was a Captain in the 51st Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry (Militia), Sept. 1862-Nov. 1862, and Colonel of the 33rd Regiment, United States Colored Infantry (formerly the 1st South Carolina Colored Infantry), Nov. 1862-Oct. 1864.
