Effective Searching 

Use the search operators below to create more precise and complex searches. For more tips, visit Using Search Operators.

AND	Used to narrow your search All terms connected are present in the results	e.g., ecosystem AND conservation
OR	Used to broaden your search Either of the terms can be present in the results	e.g., landscape OR gardening
NOT	Used to exclude terms from your search Ignores terms that may be typically in your search	e.g., pollution NOT waste
" "	Searches for your terms as an exact phrase	e.g., the book title: "Landscape Architecture for Sea Level Rise"
*	Broadens your search Searches for multiple variants of a word (singular/plural/conjugations)	e.g., garden*  (results will include gardens, gardening, gardeners, etc.)

 

Using Filters

Use filters to narrow our search results. You can filter your search to show results with a specific date range of the publication, resource type, location of library collection, subject, author/creator, language, form/genre, and more. For more tips, visit Filter My Results. 

 

Access Options

In HOLLIS, there are several ways to gain access to materials:

• Borrow, Renew, and Return Library Materials
• Scan & Deliver allows you to request a PDF copy of an article or book chapter.
• InterLibrary Loan (ILL) allows you to request a copy of the item if isn't available at Harvard Library.
• Borrow Direct allows you to request items from partner libraries for delivery to Harvard, free of charge.
