Housing

Welcome to our digital exhibit exploring Housing. This page is a companion to the physical display in the HKS Library, available through August 2025. Harvard affiliates can request books via HOLLIS, for pick-up at the library of your choice.

Experts agree that the United States is facing a crisis of housing supply and affordability. As of 2022, the country is estimated to have a shortage of over 4.5 million homes. This shortage -- decades in the making -- has combined with other economic factors like elevated interest rates and high construction costs to make homeownership unaffordable for millions of Americans. Even though rental is the only housing option for many, it still comes with significant financial burdens. In 2023, nearly half of all renting U.S. households spent more than 30% of their income on housing. Housing affordability is top-of-mind for many in the U.S. In 2024, 69% of Americans said they were "very concerned" about the cost of housing, which emerged as one of the key issues of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

This display features books and research resources that shed light on the housing crisis, its history, and potential paths forward. In the display, you'll find materials that explore the many dimensions of housing today including zoning and regulation; homelessness and eviction; race and discrimination; markets and homeownership; and public, social, and subsidized housing. The books primarily focus on the United States but several offer international perspectives.
