HathiTrust Digital Library has joined Google Book Search and Internet Archive as a major digital library.  HathiTrust includes books and periodicals, fully viewable when out of copyright (generally pre-1923 or government documents).  Each full text item is linked to a standard library catalog record providing good metadata and subject terms.  Thus a full text search of the whole database can be limited by title or Subject term.  Non-viewable items can be searched to show on which pages your search term occurs.  Internet Archive has recently added a full text search over its whole text collection.

Illustrated Civil War Newspapers and Magazines includes Union, Confederate, Abolitionist, and British papers.

Images of the American Civil War (Alexander Street) offers photographs, wartime recruiting posters, envelopes, and other ephemera.
