Under the auspices of the Schlesinger Library, the Black Women Oral History Project interviewed 72 African-American women between 1976 and 1981. The project sought a cross section of women who had made significant contributions to American society in the first half of the twentieth century. Some interviewees were active in international cooperation efforts, including Merze Tate, author of Diplomacy in the Pacific, Zelma George, alternate delegate to the United Nations and otherwise active in international affairs, and Flemmie Kittrell, a specialist in nutrition who served on several nutrition assignments in Africa and India for the State Department and as a United Nations observer. Burrage worked at various Boston social service agencies. She joined the Radcliffe Unit established by the Radcliffe Alumnae Association War Work Committee. Its members were drivers and aides to the French Red Cross, from April 1919 to May 1920, during reconstruction efforts in French villages in the aftermath of World War I. Burrage was stationed with the Union des Femmes de France, Poste Dispensaire in Vermand, Aisne. The collection contains typescript copies of Burrage's weekly letters home from France. Chennault was an author, lecturer, business consultant, and citizen-diplomat. Born in Beijing, she married Claire Lee Chennault of the U.S. 14th Air Force, former commander of the Flying Tigers and supporter of the China Lobby. The marriage brought her to the attention of the National Government of the Republic of China, as well as American businessmen, government officials, military leaders, and lobbyists. The couple divided their time between China nad America, and Anna continued to work to address American groups on the subject of Taiwan and Chinese-American relations. She testified as president of Chinese Refugee Relief before a Senate Subcommittee, urging the United States to help refugees fleeing the Cultural Revolution, and warned against the dangers of Communism as she lectured across the United States. The collection documents her years as a citizen with correspondence, writings and speeches, and files pertaining to her work with Chinese-American Organizations and the Republican Party. Constance Huntington Hall, daughter of Constance Eliza Bottom and Edwin Herbert Hall, was born in 1886 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She worked as an English and Latin teacher and taught private piano lessons. From 1915 to 1921, Hall served as chairman of the New England Clothing Committee, working with the Comité Franco-Américaine pour la Protection des Enfants de la Frontière, an organization that established centers in France to care for displaced French and Belgian children during the war. Harriet Burton Laidlaw was a suffragist, social and civic reformer, and internationalist. A concern with women's rights now blossomed into a remarkably active involvement in a variety of causes and organizations, including a membership in the Women's Non-Partisan Committee for the League of Nations, and working on an appeal to allow victims of Nazi persecution into the United States with Carrie Chapman Catt. She was active in the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, Americans United for World Organization, the Citizens' Union of New York City, the Women's Union League, American Association of University Women, and the Children's Aid Society. Louisa Putnam Loring was founder and president of the Aiken, South Carolina Sanitarium and the Beverly Anti-Tuberculosis Society. Both she and her sister, Katharine Peabody Loring, worked for peace and with the American Red Cross. Materials related to her work at Aiken and with the Red Cross have been digitized and made available in the online finding aid for the Papers of the Loring Family.

McKinnon was a birth control advocate and worked with the Margaret Sanger Research Bureau to establish birth control clinics around the United States. She was the Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood Association Chicago area, and a field worked for the Pathfinder Fund, a private organization for international family planning. In this last position she traveled in India, Africa, and the Middle East to help in the establishment of family planning organizations and clinics. Morgan is a self-identified radical feminist and participated in a number of feminist movements and organizations throughout the 1960's and 1970's. She founded the Sisterhood Is Global Institute, and co-founded and has served on the boards of many organizations, including The Women's Media Center, Feminist Women's Health Network, and the National Battered Women's Refuge Network. Morgenthau received a doctorate in politics from Oxford University and joined the Politics Department at Brandeis University in 1963. She formed the school's graduate program in Sustainable International Development before retiring in 2003. She helped establish a Food Corps and also founded the Liaison Committee for Food Corps Programmes International, which provided low-cost assistance to rural populations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She also served on Jimmy Carter's Foreign Policy and Defense Task Force. The collection documents her teaching career and political work, as well as her work on sustainable development, through lecture notes, conference proceedings, articles, speeches, and other materials. Mary Y. Munford was director of the Department of Public Welfare in Stamford, Connecticut, 1935-1940, and then director of Recreation and Personal Service Units with the American Red Cross in Ft. McClellan, Alabama. During World War II she served with the Red Cross in England, North Africa, and Italy. From 1946 to 1947 she was welfare supervisor for UNRAA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) in China. She was interviewed about her World War II with the American Red Cross. Audiotapes of Munford's interview are digitized and available via Harvard Library Audio.

Chloe Owings was a social worker, government official, college professor and dean, public speaker and broadcaster. She served as visitor and district secretary of the New York Charity Organization Society (1911-1912) and general secretary of Associated Charities in Poughkeepsie, New York (1912-1916), before leaving for France where she served in various capacities for the American Relief Clearing House in Paris, in French military hospitals, and for the American Red Cross. Alice Paul was a Quaker, lawyer, and lifelong activist for women's rights. She studied economics and sociology at the universities of London and Birmingham and worked at a number of British social settlements. n 1938 Paul founded the World Woman's Party in Geneva, Switzerland. After the war, the World Woman's Party lobbied successfully for the inclusion of equality provisions in the United Nations charter, and worked in close consultation with the Commission on the Status of women and the Commission on Human Rights on numerous reports on the status of women, and on including equal rights provisions in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Writer, educator, and social worker Ida Pruitt was born in China on December 2, 1888, the daughter of Southern Baptist missionaries Cicero Washington and Anna Seward Pruitt. She spent the first twelve years of her life in Hwanghsien, a village in Shantung province. During the Japanese occupation she and Rewi Alley organized Chinese Industrial Cooperatives, an international committee that set up cooperatives with the aim of making the Chinese self-sufficient. In 1917 the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association funded a committee to sponsor post-war relief work by Radcliffe alumnae in France. The collection consists of Scrapbooks with photographs, correspondence and reports describing the Radcliffe alumnae war relief work. They were compiled by Anna Holman (Class of 1914).
