Use HOLLIS to Find PAEs from Past Years
Most past PAEs can be found in our online catalog, HOLLIS. Search by title and/or author to locate specific PAEs in HOLLIS. You can also enter "policy analysis exercise" using quotes in your search and add keywords to find relevant PAEs.
Below are some sample searches:
- "policy analysis exercise BGP [limits your search to BGP PAEs only; Note 2020 PAEs were not assigned an academic area]
- "policy analysis exercise" corruption
- "policy analysis exercise" "public finance"
- "policy analysis exercise" "corporate social responsibility"
If you cannot obtain a PAE via HOLLIS, please email library_research@hks.harvard.edu for access. Include the author name, date of PAE and academic area if known.

Interdisciplinary Databases (search tools with many contents)
- Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) (Harvard Login) Includes scholarly literature all disciplines but also contains includes broader range of publication types including trade publications and news articles.
- Proquest Social Science Premium Collection (Harvard Login) Academic articles in social science disciplines including politics, public policy, economics and international studies.
- Google Scholar (Harvard Login) Searches scholarly literature, theses, books, and reports in all disciplines. Using the Harvard link will connect you to the full-text of some articles. Look for the "Try Harvard Library" link or button to retrieve the full-text of the article. This search engine is machine-indexed, and is a full-text search.
- Web of Science (Harvard Login)Web of Science human-index the world’s leading scholarly literature in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities, as published in journals, conference proceedings, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions across the globe.
Features:Cites References – the backward references - the research that this paper cites, and its discoveries were based upon.
Times Cited – the forward citations – more recently published papers that cite this one.
Related Records – papers which share at least one cited reference in common with this paper. If they share citations, they’re likely discussing similar topics.
Notes: EBSCOhost and ProQuest host many databases for a range of contents, from statistics, journals, newspapers, theses, to government documents. They function as a search tool and you can search all, multiple, or selected databases within each platform. As an alum, you may have access to EBSCOhost Academic Search Alum Edition. Finding Books
HOLLIS, the catalog for all of Harvard's 30+ libraries, is the best place to look for books.
Search Tips
- Follow subject headings to locate similar books on the same topic such as Public-Private sector cooperation

Digital Scans of Articles and Book Chapters
Use the Scan & Deliver option in HOLLIS to get 1-2 chapters scanned from a print book or an article from a journal only available in print. If this service is available for an item you will see it as an option within the item's record when logged into HOLLIS with your Harvard Key.
Use Interlibrary Loan to get articles that are in journals or book chapters not available through Harvard Library. If you have not used this service before you will need to register first before submitting your request. Print books are currently unavailable through this service.
Find Grey Literature
- Think Tank SearchThe HKS Library Think Tank Search is a Google Custom Search of more than 1300 think tanks and research centers.
List of types of grey literature.
Search using Google conventions such as:
- Putting quotation marks around phrases.
- Including a minus sign [-] with no space in front of a description of what you don't want. (This can also be useful for removing results from a certain think tank in your results).
- Change Sort by relevance to Sort by date.
- Web of ScienceSearch conference proceedings, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions around the world.
- PolicyFile Index (Harvard Login)Policy File Index is a unique resource for U.S. public policy research in that it grants users access to timely, updated information from over 350 public policy think tanks, nongovernmental organizations, research institutes, university centers, advocacy groups, and other entities. Over 75 public policy topics are covered, from foreign policy to domestic policy.
Locate News Sources
Search news aggregators available through Harvard Library for regional and international news stories.
