Timeline of Departmental Names and Chairs

The following research was conducted by Hanna Clutterbuck-Cook and Heather Mumford between 2020 and 2022, using historic course catalogs and other reference material available at the Center for the History of Medicine. Please email us with corrections, clarifications, or questions. 


1913 - 1922 –  Formal departments did not exist in the early school. Rather, courses were grouped together in the catalog, and these specific “groups” were given titles such as those listed below. Students took public health courses at HMS, HU in Cambridge, and MIT. The early groups connected to environmental health (note -- no chairs were appointed until 1922, when these groups evolved into departments) were:

1923 - Industrial Medicine founded (note: Industrial Hygiene and Industrial Medicine are often used interchangeably) 

  • David Edsall (1923-1928) 
  • Alice Hamilton (1929-1930)

1923 - Applied Physiology founded

  • Cecil Drinker (1923-1948)

 

1924 - Applied Physiology becomes Physiology

  • James Whittenberger (1948-1980) 
  • John Little (1980-1981) 

 

1925 - Industrial Toxicology merges with Industrial Medicine

 

1932 - Ventilation and Illumination, Industrial Medicine, and Sanitary Engineering merge to become Public Health Engineering 

  • Philip Drinker (1932-1943) 

 

1944 - Public Health Engineering dissolves; Sanitary Engineering and Industrial Hygiene return to being separate departments
